Oil fouling is a well-documented problem in the HVACR industry.
The American Society Of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) have addressed the results of the interaction between the oil and the refrigerant. Oil fouling of the heat transfer surfaces of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, will cause a loss of about 7% efficiency the first year, 5% the second year, and 2% per year the following years. According to ASHRAE, performance is degraded by as much as 30% due to the build-up of lubricants on internal surfaces. Higher percentages up to 40% have been observed in systems in 20 years or older.
This is a problem that impacts all equipment of these types….DX units, Chillers and refrigeration units of any size. This impeded heat transfer issue causes units to run longer to meet the desired temperature set points and therefore actually use more kWh’s to produce less cooling.
How does this happen?
During normal operations of these various types of cooling equipment trace amounts of lubricating oil in the compressor migrates into the refrigerant and begins to coat the metal heat transfer surfaces. This coating, although very thin and created by very small amounts of oil creates a big problem for effective heat transfer.
